PETER MICHEL | SPIRIT COORDINATOR/HEAD COACH
Peter Michel is in his fourth year at Maryville and is directly responsible for coaching more than 50 scholarship student-athletes comprised of the Spirit Program: Co-ed Cheer Team, Dance Team and Mascot Team. He collaborates with two Assistant Coaches, while facilitating the Spirit Program’s practices, games, recruiting, events, travel, choreography, national competition, fundraising, alumni relations, budget, athletic support and Maryville University requirements.
This past year, the Coed Cheer Team placed 13th in Small Coed Division II and the Dance Team placed 10th in Jazz and third in Team Performance, the highest in program history for any Maryville team at the NCA & NDA Collegiate Cheer & Dance Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. In addition to his Athletics role, Michel is an Advisor to the Go Saints Program within Student Involvement and Student Life. Go Saints is a student-lead organization that promotes spirit and pride on campus by hosting events and building community relations.
Prior to coming to Maryville in 2014, Michel worked full-time for Universal Cheerleaders Association (U.C.A.) for 20+ years in various management roles at their Varsity Spirit Corporation headquarters in Memphis, Tenn., and coached part-time for more than 16 years in Shelby County Schools in Memphis, Tenn. As an advocate for safety in the cheerleading industry, Michel is American Association of Cheerleading Coaches & Administrators (A.A.C.C.A.) Safety Certified and is Heartsaver: First Aid, CPR and AED Certified through the American Heart Association (A.H.A.) and has been administering coach’s education and training clinics both domestically and internationally. He has also been a judge at the local, state, regional, national and international level. Michel is a 1994 graduate of the University of Hartford, where he earned his B.A. in Criminal Justice and was a four-year member of the Hawks Cheer Team and captain for two years, and is originally from Boston, Mass.
